1) Prime Minister Harper meets Canada’s most influential Hispanics
4th annual Hispanic awards launched with FOCAL and DFAIT

Ottawa, June 2, 2010 – For the first time, on May 27, 2010, a delegation of influential Hispanic Canadians from across Canada met with the Prime Minister of Canada, the Rt. Hon. Stephen Harper. The delegation of winners from the “10 most influential Hispanic Canadians” awards program raised issues of importance to the Hispanic community with the Prime Minister in his office, including a public request from Mauricio Ospina, awards organizer, to declare April as Hispanic Heritage month in Canada as well as support for procurement opportunities related to the 2015 Pan-American Games. Nominations for this year’s awards were declared open until July 31, 2010.

During their visit to Parliament Hill, the delegates also attended a speech by Mexican President Felipe Calderon, were publicly recognized during the Parliament’s Question Period by the Hon. Randy Hoback, and held a private meeting with James Lambert, Director General for Latin America and the Caribbean at the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade of Canada (DFAIT). The meeting was supported by the Ottawa-based think-tank Canadian Foundation for the Americas (FOCAL) and its director Carlo Dade.

The “10 most influential Hispanic Canadians” national awards program is organized by the Canadian Hispanic Business Association (CHBA) with the support of its main sponsor Scotiabank. Award winners represent thirteen Spanish-speaking countries living in five different Canadian provinces. The Hispanic delegation included Esteban Lasso, Dr. Carlos Morillo, Dr. Ivar Mendez, Johnny Campuzano, Dr. Julio Torres-Recinos, Lita Gonzalez-Dickey, Dr. Marlinda Freire, Mario Perez, Dr. Carmen Romero, Dr. Marco A. Guzman and Oscar A. Jofre Jr, and led by the awards organizer Mauricio Ospina.

James Lambert from DFAIT discussed Canada’s diverse engagement with Spanish speaking countries, and singled out Scotiabank as a positive example of Canadian involvement in Spanish speaking countries. The programs ended with a reception attended by Ambassadors from Spanish-speaking countries and members of the Federal Parliament, where nominations for this year’s awards were declared open until July 31, 2010. This year’s winners will be announced this November in Toronto. Dr. Ivar Mendez, a pioneer in the use of robotics in neurosurgery and director of Canada’s only Cell Restoration Laboratory in Nova Scotia whose research assists Canadian soldiers, asserted: “I am proud to be a member of the growing Hispanic-Canadians community, a group that has made significant contributions in all fields to the make up of Canada as a great nation”.

According to FOCAL’s Executive Director Carlo Dade, “In 2006 Spanish became the third most widely spoken language in Canada and has now earned the title of Canada’s most important non-official language”. A 2008 study from Statistics Canada based on the Census 2006 acknowledged three quarter million Hispanics in Canada. Hispanics are five years younger, more likely to be university educated than other Canadians, most live in the GTA with over 70 per cent arriving in the last 25 years.

“This trip to Ottawa allowed influential Hispanics to convey a direct message to the most important spheres of power in Canada, and to reinforce the fact that Hispanics are a force in Canada’s Creative Class. I invite everyone to submit nominations for this year’s awards before July 31. We still need one sponsor who will receive national recognition by helping us raise the quality of this program while reducing ticket costs,” said Mauricio Ospina. Past winners, journalists and executives from the Globe & Mail, Toronto Star, Canadian Business, CBC, FOCAL, Rogers and CityTV will be invited to select this year’s winners. The keynote speaker, a person of international influence, will be announced in the fall.

Nominations are of maximum 250 words in English, and include the name, telephone number and email address of both the nominee and the person making the nomination. Selection criteria include: Influence in the Canadian mainstream, Education, Achievements & Awards, Support of the Hispanic community, and Volunteerism. Supporting documentation may be required. Nominations must be sent to director@HispanicBusiness.ca by July 31, 2010; nominees will be asked to accept their nominations. Past nominees can be nominated again.
